Collection of 34 letters, all but 7 written by Porter, 2nd Lt. in C.S.A. 4th Kentucky Cavalry Regt. Also includes his diary (1864). Porter was captured by Union forces in 1863 and was incarcerated for 20 months in Johnson Island prison near Sandusky, OH. Diary entries and letters to parents and other relatives describe conditions and everyday life at Johnson Island and travels following his release.

Confederate soldier, secret agent, and judge. Hines was imprisoned at the Ohio Penitentiary with John Hunt Morgan and the officers under Morgan following their capture in July 1863 while on Morgan's Ohio Raid.
